Airbnb, Inc. is an American company that runs an online marketplace for lodging, mainly homestays for vacation rentals, and tourism activities. Based in San Francisco, California, the platform is accessible on its website and mobile app.
The company has permanently banned parties at its listed homes for short-term rentals. It believes the ban has worked and said yesterday that reports of parties on listed properties fell 44% year-on-year. Airbnb claims that more than 6,600 guests were suspended last year due to a related breach.
Airbnb began cracking down on the party in 2019 after a deadly shooting at a party at home in California. At that time, the company banned promotional parties at Airbnb locations on social media. It said the number of parties at Airbnb’s location increased during the pandemic as people moved the gatherings from bars and clubs to rental apartments. That led to a temporary ban in 2020.
While the ban will be permanent, Airbnb said it will lift the 16-person limit on rental properties. The cap was caused by health concerns before the vaccine against the pandemic became available. “Over time, the party ban became much more than a public health measure. It developed into a bedrock community policy,” the company said.
