Andrew Garfield has spoken up about his role in Spider-Man: No Way Home after spending all of 2021 denying his involvement. No Way Home, the MCU’s third Spidey film with Tom Holland in the lead, has many performers from the character’s prior series, making it Hollywood’s worst-kept secret. Despite Marvel and Sony’s best attempts to keep some cameos hidden, rumors and leaked photographs sabotaged their plans.
Garfield, on the other hand, did his utmost to keep things quiet. Garfield reprises his role as Peter Parker in No Way Home, starring with Tobey Maguire, after appearing in Sony’s two Amazing Spider-Man films.
Garfield has broken his quiet in a new interview with Variety, now that Spider-Man: No Way Home has been released for almost a month. After discussing what drew him back to the role and if he’d do it again if it felt right, Garfield highlighted how much it meant to him to be able to rehabilitate himself as Spider-Man. Despite the fact that it seems like everyone is chanting his praises today, the Amazing Spider-Man films are among the least well-liked superhero films of the last decade, and Garfield has openly expressed his dissatisfaction with them. But, as he noted, No Way Home has made him feel a lot better:
“I am so grateful. I’m just really, really grateful that I got to tie up some loose ends for the Peter that I was playing. I love that character and I’m grateful that I got to work with these incredible actors, this incredible director, and Marvel in conjunction with Sony. It was joyful, and a feeling of closure for me. There were so many unanswered questions for my Peter, where we left it. I got to step back in and get some healing for him. And also really supporting [Holland’s] Peter, and honoring his character completing that trilogy, not distracting or detracting from it.”
Since the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home, fans have been clamoring for Sony to develop The Amazing Spider-Man 3 with Garfield at the helm. Although his portrayal of the character drew mixed reviews in 2012 and 2014, there is now a newfound appreciation for all Garfield brought to the role. As he stated in the new interview, Spider-Man: No Way Home was all about bringing him closure, which is rather extraordinary.
Many fans will be wondering what will happen next. There are currently no official plans to bring Garfield back, despite several claims circulating on social media. For example, some fans hope and assume that Sony’s Morbius’ recent delay is due to the addition of a Garfield sequence. That may not be the case, but it’s evident that a lot of people want to see him in a suit again. I know I do! If he doesn’t, at the very least, Spider-Man: No Way Home provided him with the ideal conclusion he had been denied for years.
