Ashes 2021: Australia posts 221-2 on day 1

Australia was 221/2 at Stumps on Day 1 of the 2nd Ashes Test against England, at the Adelaide Oval in Adelaide. Australia won the toss and decided to bat. Steve Smith was named the captain for this test after Pat Cummins was ruled out due to Covid restrictions. Australia made two changes bringing in Michael Neser for Pat Cummins and Jhye Richardson in for Josh Hazelwood who picked up a side strain. England was delighted to announce James Anderson and Stuart Broad’s return. Mark wood and Jack Leach were benched to bring in England’s most experienced pace duo.

Marnus Labuschange and David Warner steadied the ship after Stuart Broad struck early in the day to get rid of Marcus Harris. Australia was reduced to 4/1 and then Labuschange and Warner stitched a 172 runs stand to put Australia in a commanding position. Labuschange is unbeaten at 95 off 275 balls with Smith 18 off 71 deliveries.  David Warner narrowly missed out on a ton scoring 95 off 167 before stokes got the better of him. Broad and Anderson were impressive as ever at the start and England had their noses in front. However, Labuschange and Warner gave nothing away in the next two sessions. Jos Buttler dropped a couple of sitters to add to England’s misery, they have also wasted a couple of reviews and are left with only 1 now.

Australia will look to dominate day 2 with the bat and post a mammoth 1st Innings score. Catch all the actions on Sony liv starting at 9:30 AM on Friday.
