Ashes 2021: Joe Root and Dawid Malan rescue England from a big defeat on Day 3

England was 220/2 at the end of the third day of the first Test against Australia at the Gabba in Brisbane. England still trailing Australia by 58 runs.

Tavis Head continued his amazing batting performance as he went on to score 152 off just 148 balls. Mitchell Starc also joined the party on day 3 at the Gabba scoring 35 runs off 64 balls. Australia’s last man to go down was Travis Head who was bowled out by Mark Wood. Robinson and Mark Wood ended with 3 wickets each and Australia was bowled out for 425 with a lead of 278 runs.


Rory Burns and Haseeb Hameed opened for England. England needed a solid start and Mitchell Starc had everyone on their toes in the very first over when Rory Burns was adjourned LBW. Although Rory Burns’s poor form continued and was sent packing by the Australian captain Pat Cummins. Haseeb Hameed and Joe Root looked Comfortable in the middle until Mitchell Starc got the better of Haseeb Hameed. When the England captain came out to bat, England was struggling at 61/2 and had a mountain to climb. Joe Root (86 off 158 balls) stitched a 159 runs partnership with Dawid Malan(80 off 177 balls) to finish the third and the final session of day 3 at 220/2. Joe Root and Dawid Malan did a good job on day 3 to bring England back in the game. Although England has a lot to do because of the first-innings collapse.
