India’s defence manufacturing sector has witnessed a compound annual growth rate of 3.9 between the year 2016 to 2020. The Indian government through the Make in India project has allowed private companies to enter into the defence equipment manufacturing process.
1. Tata Advanced Systems
Tata Advanced System is a subsidiary of Tata Sons, which is a holding company of Tata Group. The company was founded in 2007, its headquarters is in Telangana, Hyderabad. The company is a lead system integration company for delivering weapons for the Indian Armed forces. It is one of the biggest defence vehicle manufacturing companies that are satisfying the growing needs of the Indian armed forces. The revenue of the company is over 500 crore rupees in the year 2020.
2. Reliance Naval and Engineering Limited
Reliance Naval and Engineering Limited is Indian shipbuilding and heavy industry company. It was founded by Nikhil Prataprai Gandhi Bhavesh Prataprai Gandhi in 1997. Its headquarters is in Mumbai. The revenue of the company is US$ 14.13 billion in the year 2018. Formerly the company was called Pipavav Shipyard Limited. The company awarded a contract of US$ 350 million to build five offshore patrol vessels for the Indian Navy.
3. Mahindra Defence System Limited
Mahindra Defence System limited is one of the leading producers of innovative armoured solutions for the Indian armed forces. It was founded in 2012 by its parent company, Mahindra Limited which is also the eighth largest group in India. The revenue of the company lies between 100 crore – 500 crore in rupees in the fiscal year 2021.
4. Adani Defence and Aerospace
Adani Defence and Aerospace is a private sector manufacturer of unmanned aerial systems, small arms and ammunition. The company was founded by its parent company Adani group in 1993. The company plays an instrumental role in transforming India into a destination for world-class defence and aerospace manufacturing.
5. Kalyani Rafael Advanced System
Kalyani Rafael Advanced System is a joint venture between Kalyani Group from India and Rafael Advanced System limited from Israel. It is India’s first private sector missile sub-systems manufacturing facility. The revenue of the company is from 1crore to 100 crore rupees in the financial year 2020.
