Google Co-Founder Sergey Brin Files For Divorce, Check out Details

Google co-founder Sergey Brin has filed for divorce from author-attorney Nicole Shanahan, making him the third mega billionaire to do so in the recent past. Brin, the world’s sixth richest person, seeks dissolution of his four-year marriage due to irreconcilable differences. According to court records, the couple has been separated since December 2021. The Google co-founder is seeking joint custody of their two-year-old daughter.

According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Brin owns $94 billion in property, largely derived  from his interest in Google, which he co-founded with Larry Page in 1998 and later founded Alphabet’s holding company. Both he and Page left Alphabet in 2019, but are still board members and shareholders.

Brin’s previous marriage to 23andMe co-founder Anne Wojcicki ended in divorce in 2015.  His  recent division took place a year after Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates announced the dissolution of their marriage, and about three years after Jeff Bezos and MacKenzie Scott got divorced. Billionaire divorces receive extensive media attention as phenomenal amounts of wealth are at stake.

Monica Mazzei, a partner at Sideman & Bancroft LLP in San Francisco, said Brin and Shanahan would most likely have a prenuptial agreement. But since the case is being handled by a private judge, “we will never know the details of the divorce,” she said. Philanthropy could also play a role in the divorce agreement. Nicole Shanahan set up the Bia-Echo Foundation, that works towards longevity, equality, criminal justice reform and a healthy and liveable planet.
