Kevin Spacey, the Oscar- and winning actor, appeared on Thursday in a London court facing charges of sexual assault against three men.

Nearly five years after allegations against him first surfaced. Mr Spacey is now facing four charges of sexual assault in the United Kingdom, as well as one charge of forcing a person to engage in non-consensual penetrative sexual activity.

Mr Spacey was surrounded by photographers and media cameras as he appeared in London’s Westminster Magistrates Court for a preliminary hearing. Mr Spacey sat alone in a small room in a blue suit, occasionally smiling at the journalists present, but he hardly spoke. The actor made no comment outside the court but has previously said that he is “confident I will prove my innocence”.

The alleged incidents took place in London between March 2005 and August 2008, and one in western England in April 2013. The victims are now in their 30s and 40s.  A  time when Mr Spacey was the artistic director of the Old Vic theatre in London.

During the half-hour hearing, Spacey sat in the glass-fronted dock, standing to confirm his name and London address and was read the charges. The case will be sent to a crown court, which handles more serious cases, where Mr Spacey will make his first appearance next month.
