Larsen and Toubro commissions new green hydrogen plant at Hazira in Gujarat

The new green hydrogen facility at Hazira in Gujarat was officially opened on Saturday by engineering giant Larsen & Toubro (L&T). The change comes five months after the company signed a joint venture agreement to generate green hydrogen with the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) and ReNew Power. In addition, L&T and IOC have entered into a separate joint venture agreement to manufacture electrolyzers.

On Saturday, IOC President Shrikant Madhav Vaidya inaugurated the green hydrogen plant.

The facility will generate 45 kg of green hydrogen per day for use exclusively within the company’s Hazira production complex.

Alkaline technology (380 kW) and polymer electrolytic membranes (420 kW) are both used in the electrolysis of the green hydrogen plant, with a capacity of 800 kW. It will be powered by a 500 kWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and a rooftop solar power plant with a maximum DC capacity of 990 kW.

A 380 kW alkaline electrolyzer was installed in the first phase of the project and future expansion will include a 420 kW PEM electrolyzer as well as increasing the capacity of the solar plant to 1 ,6 MW DC.

Subramanian Sarma, Full-time Director and Senior Executive Vice President (Energy), L&T said, “This initiative aligns with L&T’s climate leadership goals for Lakshya-2026. The range concerns the creation of high purity Green Hydrogen (99.99%) and oxygen, and their captive consumption in production workshops. A mixture of 15% hydrogen and natural gas will be used as fuel and oxygen will complement existing uses in cutting and welding applications. ”

In addition, an integrated data analytics platform created by L&T will provide information on how well electrolyzers and plant components are operating

L&T has committed to achieving be water neutral by 2035 and carbon neutral by 2040 as part of its ESG obligation.
