The ‘Run-Machine’ Virat Kholi breaks Tendulkar’s record of most hundreds at home

At the third One-Day International between India and Sri Lanka on Sunday at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram, Virat Kohli scored his second century of 2023.

The century was Kholi’s third in the previous four ODI innings. During India’s December 2022 tour of Bangladesh, Kohli recorded his first ODI century in over three years. He then added another century in the opening ODI against Sri Lanka in Guwahati.

When skipper Rohit Sharma left the game after reaching 42 runs in the 16th over, Kohli entered the batting order. Together with Shubman Gill, Kohli put together a 131-run partnership for the second wicket. In the 43rd over, Kohli scored three figures off just 85 balls.

Just three tracks separate Kohli from Sachin Tendulkar, who holds the record for most ODI hundreds with 49. With his 21st century in 101 innings, the 34-year-old also surpassed Tendulkar’s previous mark for most ODI hundreds scored at home.
Against Sri Lanka, he scored his tenth century. He broke Tendulkar’s record for the most ODI hundreds against a single team (9 hundred against Australia and 9 centuries against West Indies).

In addition, Kohli quickly passed Mahela Jayawardene (12,650) to go up to sixth place in ODI run scoring.
